What a Sphynx kitten really costs in Dubai
The kitten price is only the first line. A realistic look at the setup, vet care, grooming, food, holidays and time a Sphynx really asks of you in the UAE.
The first question most people ask is “how much is the kitten?” The more useful question is “what does the first year actually cost, and can I afford the tenth?”
A Sphynx is not an expensive accessory. It is a cat with a higher-than-average grooming routine, a strong need for company and a talent for finding the most expensive blanket in the house.
The kitten
Prices in the UAE vary with the line, colour, sex and what the breeder includes. Two listings at the same price can be very different purchases.
Ask what is included before you compare:
- Vaccinations appropriate to age
- Microchip and registration
- Deworming
- Vet record
- Starter food
- A familiar blanket
- Support after collection
A cheap kitten with no records is not cheap. The first vet visit, vaccinations and microchip can close the gap quickly.
We take cash in person and give a receipt. If a breeder asks for a large payment before you have seen the kitten or the home, slow down.
The setup
Before the kitten arrives, budget for:
- A carrier
- A covered litter box and litter
- Food and water bowls
- A warm bed and several washable blankets
- A scratching post
- Nail clippers and ear cleaner
- Gentle cat shampoo or skin wipes
- Toys and a puzzle feeder
- A HEPA air purifier, if allergies are a concern
- Pet insurance, if available
You do not need all of it on day one, but you do need the carrier, litter box, food, bed and a safe room.
The vet
Plan for:
- An initial health check
- Vaccinations according to your vet’s schedule
- Microchip registration
- Deworming and parasite prevention
- Dental checks
- Annual wellness visits
- A contingency fund for the unexpected
Costs vary by clinic and by the cat’s needs. Ask your vet for a written estimate rather than relying on a forum.
The routine
A Sphynx needs more grooming than a furred cat:
- Weekly wipe-down or bath with a vet-approved product
- Weekly ear cleaning
- Nail trims every couple of weeks
- Regular skin checks
This is not expensive in money, but it is expensive in consistency. A cat that is never brushed is fine; a Sphynx that is never cleaned is not.
Food and litter
Sphynx cats can have sensitive digestion. Keep them on the food they were eating and transition slowly. A higher-quality food may cost more per bag, but it can reduce stomach upsets and litter-box surprises.
Litter is a recurring cost, especially if you scoop twice a day and change the tray regularly. Do not cut corners here; a clean tray prevents problems.
Time is the real cost
A Sphynx is not a cat that thrives alone all day. They want company. They follow you. They talk. They get bored.
Before you buy, answer honestly:
- Who is home during the day?
- What happens when you travel?
- Can you afford a sitter who understands the breed?
- Do you have time for daily play?
- Are you ready for a cat that will be in the same room as you, always?
A bored Sphynx can become a loud, demanding, furniture-climbing Sphynx. That is not a defect; it is the breed.
The first-year budget
Instead of a single number, build a spreadsheet with four columns:
- One-time setup — carrier, bed, litter box, scratching post, bowls
- Kitten — price and what is included
- Health — vet check, vaccinations, microchip, insurance/fund
- Monthly — food, litter, grooming, sitter
Add a contingency line. Then decide.
If the numbers only work with no vet fund and no sitter, the timing is not right yet. That is not a judgment; it is planning. The right kitten is worth waiting for.
