Sphynx care in a UAE summer: heat, sun and skin

A practical summer routine for Sphynx cats in Dubai and the wider UAE — air conditioning, sunburn, hydration, grooming and the warning signs that need a vet.

A Sphynx looks like the kind of cat that would love a sunbeam. It does. The problem is that it has no coat to filter the sun, and the UAE summer does not do gentle.

Summer with a Sphynx is manageable. It just takes a little more thought than opening a window.

Keep the cat indoors

This is the single most important rule. A Sphynx can sunburn, and their skin is exposed all year. Keep them indoors during the day, especially between late morning and late afternoon.

If you have a balcony or garden, supervised time early or late in the day is safer than midday. Shade and water are non-negotiable. A cat that slips outside in July is not “getting fresh air”; it is at risk.

Air conditioning is part of the care plan

Sphynx cats seek warmth, but they also overheat. In a Dubai summer, a comfortable indoor temperature is kinder than a hot flat with fans.

  • Keep the indoor space cool, especially the room where the cat sleeps.
  • Give them a choice of spots: a warm bed, a cool tile floor, a shaded corner.
  • Never leave a cat in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
  • If the AC fails, make a cool room available and watch the cat closely.

Water, always

Sphynx cats can be fussy drinkers. Offer fresh water in more than one place, and consider a ceramic or stainless steel bowl. Some cats prefer running water; a pet fountain can help, but clean it regularly.

Wet food can add moisture, but it is not a substitute for fresh water. If your cat stops drinking, contact your vet.

Watch the skin, not just the coat

No coat means oils, dirt and sunscreen-free skin. A simple weekly routine keeps most Sphynx comfortable:

  • Wipe the body with a warm, damp cloth or give a gentle bath with a vet-approved cat cleanser.
  • Clean the ears weekly with a product made for cats — never cotton buds pushed into the ear canal.
  • Trim nails every couple of weeks.
  • Check skin folds, the belly and the armpits for redness, rashes or irritation.

Do not use human sunscreen, human shampoo or essential oils on a cat. If the skin looks sore, ask your vet before trying a product.

Play inside, not in the heat

Sphynx energy does not disappear because it is 45°C outside. Build an indoor routine:

  • Short play sessions morning and evening
  • A window perch with shade
  • Cardboard boxes, tunnels and puzzle feeders
  • A scratching post tall enough to stretch fully

Play is also how you check their breathing and energy. A cat that normally races after a toy and suddenly does not is telling you something.

Know the warning signs

Heavy panting, drooling, wobbliness, confusion, vomiting or collapse in hot weather are emergencies. Move the cat to a cool place, offer water if they are alert, and call a vet immediately. Do not wait to see if it passes.

This is general guidance, not a diagnosis. Your vet knows your cat.

The summer checklist

  • Indoor-only during peak heat
  • AC serviced before June
  • Water bowls in two or three rooms
  • Shaded window perch
  • Weekly skin and ear check
  • Nails trimmed
  • Vet contact saved in your phone
  • A holiday sitter who knows the breed

A Sphynx is a house cat with expensive taste in blankets. In the UAE, keeping them cool, covered in shade and close to water is not overprotective. It is basic care.
